Unexpected Beauty: Discover the Art Inside Auburn’s Visitor Center

Auburn-Opelika Tourism (AOT) recently opened the doors to a brand-new Auburn location. More than a place to welcome visitors and serve the community, the space was designed with intention to reflect the spirit of the destination: warm, welcoming and creative. The AOT team discussed how to incorporate the work of local artists into the 3,300 square feet of space. That conversation evolved into what has since become the branded Auburn-Opelika Art Showcase. The gallery-style experience features the work of local artists and offers both residents and visitors a meaningful way to connect with the area.

“Our hope is that someone walks in for a map or a recommendation, and walks out having experienced something unexpected. Something beautiful, local and real,” says Cat Bobo, director of Communications & Marketing at AOT. “The Showcase is an intentional way to introduce people to our community through art. It’s a surprising and meaningful way we get to tell a story about Auburn-Opelika.”

The Showcase reflects a larger mission. Deeply rooted in the communities, AOT is the official destination management organization for the region. The small but dedicated team of 10 works to elevate the economic vitality of the Auburn-Opelika area through development, sales and marketing, local event-and-stakeholder support, and more. Laser-focused on alignment with the overall long-term goals of the community, the organization works daily to ensure the opportunities they bring to the table are the best fit for those who live and work here every day.

The new Auburn location has quickly become a destination of its own. Visitors often come in for area recommendations and leave having discovered a new favorite artist or a one-of-a-kind souvenir. Even before the space officially opened, the Art Showcase was already making an impact—25 paintings sold ahead of the grand opening. Today, the gallery features work from more than 20 local artists. As many as 150 pieces are displayed

throughout the building at any given time, from large-scale paintings to smaller works tucked into offices, hallways and meeting rooms. The result is an inspiring, ever-evolving environment that reflects Auburn-Opelika’s energy and character.

While the Showcase doesn’t follow a formal rotation schedule, new work and new artists are added regularly. Visitors will find a variety of media on display, from oil and watercolor to encaustic and mixed media. Whether a regular or visiting for the first time, there’s always something fresh to experience.

The Showcase includes work by some of the region’s most well-known and respected artists. Among them is Mary Ann Casey whose expressive, folk-art-inspired paintings are rooted in her deep appreciation for nature, storytelling and artistic freedom. Nan Cunningham is known for her bold still-lifes and dynamic abstractions, while Lauren Duncan combines her passions for teaching and creativity in every piece. Iain Stewart, AWS/NWS, brings global recognition to the Showcase with his vibrant, architectural watercolors, including one piece previously displayed in the White House.

Other featured artists include Tessa Tallakson, a classically trained oil painter; Donna Young, a longtime creative fixture in downtown Auburn; John Robert Willer, whose decades-long career has earned international acclaim; and Katy Doss, whose playful, large-scale florals and abstracts bring bold personality to the space.

Every piece in the Showcase is available for purchase, with transactions handled directly between the artist and buyer. Auburn-Opelika Tourism charges no participation fees or commission, allowing artists to retain the full value of their work. Most accept Venmo or personal checks, making the purchase process simple and personal. It’s a rare opportunity to support regional talent in a way that’s direct, meaningful and entirely artist-driven.

Whether you’re browsing, buying or simply soaking in the atmosphere, the Showcase offers more than just art. It offers a connection. A connection to the makers and the stories that shape this region, and an opportunity to take a piece of that home with you while investing in the people who bring Auburn-Opelika’s creative spirit to life.

For local painter Betsy Lethander, that connection has been powerful. A Montgomery native and Auburn University alumna, Lethander returned to painting after years in landscape architecture. Her acrylic work celebrates everyday beauty, sunflowers, skies and colorful still-lifes that reflect joy and gratitude.

“Being able to share my artwork at AO Tourism has definitely increased the visibility of my work,” Lethander says. “The success I have had with showing at AO Tourism’s new beautiful and stylish office space has encouraged me to continue my artistic endeavors and to paint larger pieces. I cannot thank AO Tourism enough for this powerful act of support of local artists and the pursuit of highlighting the character of this community.”

Artist Morgan Barber shares a similar sentiment. An Auburn University alumna who has called the city home for nearly 17 years, Barber paints from her home studio while balancing art and motherhood. Her textured acrylic landscapes on wood panels evoke curiosity and imagination.

“The Auburn-Opelika Showcase is a visual feast,” she says. “The new tourism office is such an intentionally curated space. Being able to share my work with the Auburn community and having their support means more than words can express.”

The application process is intentionally inclusive. Artists of all experience levels and backgrounds are encouraged to apply, and no gallery representation is required. The only requirement is an authentic connection to Auburn-Opelika and a passion for creative expression. That openness has led to a rich and diverse representation of voices throughout the Showcase.

While the gallery experience is a highlight, AOT’s mission extends well beyond the walls. Staff is available Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., to help visitors plan itineraries, explore hidden gems, and make the most of their time in the area. Locals are encouraged to stop in as well—to explore the art, meet the team and discover something new about their own backyard.

And for those interested in going further, the recently launched Auburn-Opelika Art Trail is a self-guided experience that highlights the many places in the community where local art can be found. From small

boutiques and artisan markets to galleries and public spaces, the trail connects people with the makers and moments that define the region’s creative spirit.

While the Art Showcase is housed in the new Auburn office, AOT maintains a strong presence in both communities. Staff is based in both Auburn and Opelika offices, with the Opelika team now working from a newly renovated space downtown, shared with the Opelika Chamber of Commerce. That location will unveil the new AO Visitor Experience this season, a multi-million-dollar investment offering guests an interactive and cutting-edge glimpse into the authentic stories of our area.

Auburn-Opelika Tourism is located at 312 N Gay Street in Auburn and is open Monday through Friday during regular business hours. To learn more about current artists in the AO Art Showcase or to apply for exhibit, visit www.aotourism.com or follow @auburnopelika on social media.
