Spring has a way of stitching things together—fresh beginnings, quiet comforts and bold adventures. In this issue, we celebrate that beautiful patchwork of life that unfolds as the days grow longer and the air turns sweet again.
We begin with quilts, the ultimate symbol of care and craftsmanship. Each stitch tells a story. Like spring itself, quilts remind us that warmth doesn’t always come from the sun—it often comes from one another. Quilts are one of my favorite items to thrift, but when you can meet the artist behind the art, it is more meaningful.
That sense of nurturing continues in our exploration of herbs. From kitchen windowsills to backyard or rooftop gardens, herbs invite us to dig in the dirt and savor simple pleasures. Their fragrance and flavor carry the promise of renewal, whether you’re brewing a calming tea or adding a fresh sprig to a favorite recipe.
Speaking of recipes, it wouldn’t be spring in the South without a nod to the Kentucky Derby. Our Derby-inspired dishes are made for gathering—whether you’re watching the race at Storybook Farm’s annual Kentucky Derby Day event or just looking for an excuse to celebrate tradition, hospitality, and a well-set table.
At the heart of this issue is a deeper look at care and community. We are honored to highlight the opening of the new mental health facility of East Alabama Health, an organization dedicated to supporting emotional well-being across our region. Alongside that story, you’ll read about therapy dogs—four-legged healers whose presence offers comfort, connection, and unconditional love when it’s needed most.
For those feeling the call of the open road, our travel features take you from the serene beauty of the Brunswick Islands to the breathtaking depths of the Little Grand Canyon just across the line in Georgia. These destinations remind us that wonder doesn’t always require a passport—sometimes it’s waiting just a drive away.
Taken together, the stories in this spring issue reflect resilience, creativity, and hope. They remind us that care can be cultivated—in gardens, kitchens, communities, and within ourselves.
Thank you for welcoming us into your season. We hope these pages inspire you to explore, to gather, and to find joy in both the quiet moments and the grand views ahead.
Play your best!
Beth
