AUBURN, Ala. – The Auburn High Tigers waited a long 273 days for football to return to Duck Samford Stadium following the end of last season. However, that was nothing compared to the 90-minute lighting delay during the second quarter that extended the opening game long into the night.
Auburn High lost 56-42 to Hewitt-Trussville in their Week Zero kickoff game against the Huskies.
“We just got to make plays,” said Auburn Head Coach Keith Etheredge. “We had so many chances.”
Scoring came fast and furious for both teams, with 98 combined points between the teams. The Huskies’ 56 points was the most given up by an Auburn defense in school history, tying a 2003 game against Daphne. Huskies quarterback Jack Floyd had over 500 yards of offense, and 7 touchdowns.
“It’s frustrating,” said Etheredge. “It kind of reminded me of the Vestavia game from last year. Hopefully we improve and we get better from it.”
Auburn wide receiver Quez Johnson had an impressive performance. The senior posted 118 yards and an impressive touchdown grab over a Huskie defender.
However, everything changed when a lightning warning wall called into effect. The Huskies had just scored to take a 28-21 lead over the Tigers before the game was paused. When the game restarted, the Auburn quarterback Cason Myers through a pick-six to the Husky defensive back. Myers had three interceptions on the night. Despite the result, Coach Etheredge reiterated his belief for the season.
“I think we got an opportunity to be really good,” he said. “We showed flashes of it tonight, and I’m excited about this team. I love this team.”
Hewitt-Trussville moves to 1-0, heading home to host Hillcrest-Tuscaloosa. Auburn falls to 0-1, and will travel to Fort Walton Beach, Florida to take on Choctawhatchee High School.
