A Household Name in Golf

Davis Thompson has quickly become a household name. But before he was nationally known, his amazing ability was already apparent here on The Plains.

Currently, a professional golfer competing on the PGA Tour, Thompson began his athletic career locally while attending Lee-Scott Academy. He played a pivotal role in clenching six consecutive state team titles from 2012 to 2017 and capturing the individual state title.

As fate would have it, that is not all he captured during his tenure there.

While in school, the young Thompson was introduced to a fellow student who would later become his wife and strongest supporter.

Holly Grace Thompson recounts, “We met in high school – I am a year older than he is, and somehow, in my senior year, I found myself in an elective class with him. He always tried to sit by me, but (at the time) I thought nothing of it. Fast forward to my senior year of college, when we ran into each other at a football game. Although we had not spoken to or seen each other in years, we just hit and off and started dating.”

Thompson attended The University of Georgia, while Holly Grace chose to study locally at Auburn University. But the long-distance romance survived, and the pair were recently married in their hometown.

This past year, Thompson soared to new heights as he clenched his first PGA Tour win at the John Deere Classic on July 7, 2024, which in turn earned him an invitation to play in the 2024 Open Championship as well as the 2025 Masters Tournament.

As his wife recounts, “Obviously, it is always the dream of any tour player to win at that level- and to be there to witness it with him was simply incredible. It was also extremely emotional because the following day marked the first anniversary of my mother’s passing. Davis’s first words to me were, “That was for your Mom,” in light of him having just achieved his biggest dream highlights just how selfless he is and how we cheer with and for each other.”

Indeed, the couple altered their entire wedding once it became apparent that her mother’s health was on the decline. In a matter of weeks, they assembled a team and were wed at Saugahatchee Country Club in what turned out to be a beautiful affair (featured in East Alabama Weddings 2024.)

The Thompsons reside in St. Simons Island, Georgia, which has become a mecca for golfers, making it perfect for the pair. As Holly Grace confirms, “We are surrounded by the golf community here, which makes Davis feel right at home!”

But ‘The Local Boy Made Good’ is never far from his roots here on The Plains, and the pair visits frequently while eagerly anticipating what is yet to come!
