Lake Living

by Ann Cipperly

With sweeping, picturesque views of Lake Martin, the stunning home was constructed for relaxing and fun days on two spacious covered porches, swimming in the pool, and boating on the lake. Chic interiors reflect the colors of the outdoors in greens and blues on both levels, with five bedrooms and two kitchens with space to expand with an apartment over the garage. Once the Auburn family who lives here makes the turn from Highway 280, their mood is peaceful as they feel the weight of the world leaving, with thoughts of sunny days at the lake.

After looking at many lots, the couple knew this one was perfect because of the spectacular view and unforgettablesunsets. They purchased the lot in 2019; construction began in 2020 before Covid. The family moved into their lake home in 2021, with several family members staying at the lake to work from home.

When selecting the furnishings, the couple relied on Linda Ayers of Auburn, who had decorated three other homes for them, including one in Florida. All the homes have been decorated differently. Linda also selected the colors throughout the house, the quartz countertops in the kitchen, and the tall old copper stove hood with brass accents.

“I had enjoyed working with these clients on other residences,” Linda says, “but this one was extraordinary. The house was designed to take advantage of the spectacular views of Lake Martin from all of the living areas and bedrooms. The owners wanted a place to relax with family, friends, and canine companions.

“It was important that the furnishings be comfortable yet easy to care. Most of the fabrics used have stain-resistance properties, and faux leather is used on the counter stools around the kitchen island. Outdoor fabrics are used on the covered porches for easy cleanup.”

The kitchen, dining, and living areas are open with walls of glass windows overlooking the lake that bathe the interior in light. Floors and ceilings are made of wood, adding a natural, casual feel, while light fixtures throughout are candelabras with wrought iron.

In the entrance, a painting reflecting Lake Martin colors is captured by Nan Cunningham of Auburn and isflanked with wrought iron sconces. The art hangs over a console table with a bronze sculpture and tall vases filled with fresh greenery.

An elegant dining table is centered with a gorgeous arrangement of orchards banked with greenery in a blue and white porcelain bowl by floral designer Stanley Sistrunk of Auburn. Against the dining room wall, a sideboard displays handmade blue pottery lamps, and an antique rug anchors the space.

When entertaining, a wet bar across from the dining room is convenient for making refreshing beverages with refrigerator drawers for ice. Other drawers keep water and sodas cold for grabbing after being at the lake.

Tall cabinets in the kitchen are accessible with a sliding, wrought iron ladder with a railing around the cabinets. Stools at the island provide seating for a morning cup of coffee and breakfast. Cabinets at the island’s base are painted Hudson Bay blue, and double antique brass hanging fixtures provide lighting over the island.

A stone fireplace in the living room is accented with two blue urns on the hearth. Ceilings soar to 18 feet with exposed beams. Comfortable seating provides for cozy family time on rainy days. A nook on one side is filled with books, art, and blue and white porcelain. The wrought iron, bleached wood coffee table also displays books and greenery,

In the living room, double glass doors open to the upper-level covered porch with a wooden ceiling. A sofa and chairs are brown wicker on the porch and chairs at a wood dining table. A wrought iron coffee table provides space for beverages, while a wicker sofa table has an outdoor blue wicker lamp for soft light at dusk. On one side, a large grill is convenient for outdoor cooking.

The primary bedroom is painted a soothing color called Sea Salt and features a painting by Laura Lewis accenting the wall over the four-poster bed. Windows face the lake to enjoy morning views and start the day. Over a bench, four botanical prints provide color. The same colors are carried to the ensuite bath.

A guest room and bath are also on this level, along with the laundry room and a powder room for visitors.

There is another kitchen, den, three bedrooms, and a storm shelter on the lower level. Over the sofa is a picture of a tiger in water. Other tiger pictures and items fit the décor of Auburn fans. The owners’ three children each have their own bedroom and bath, decorated in different colors that blend together.

Doors in the den open to the lower covered porch with a cushion-filled swing bed, enticing for an afternoon nap.

The owners wanted space for their grown children to visit and gather friends on weekends. For them, the home is comfortable and livable.

After a busy career, the couple enjoys their dream home and feels blessed as they sit on their porch with their family, watching incredible sunsets over serene Lake Martin.
