AUBURN, Ala. – Wendell Green Jr. has signed an Athletics Financial Aid Agreement to play basketball next season at Auburn University, head coach Bruce Pearl announced Thursday. Green, who played his freshman season at Eastern Kentucky University, will join the Tigers for the upcoming 2021-22 season and have four years of eligibility remaining.
“Auburn basketball has a history of doing special things with very special undersized point guards,” Pearl said. “Wendell Green has won at every level, but has always had to prove himself to people. He’s won at La Lumiere School in Indiana, Detroit Country Day in Michigan and last season at Eastern Kentucky. He’s a fierce competitor and he makes everyone he plays with on the floor better.”
A 5-foot-11, 170-pound guard, Green averaged 15.8 points, 5.0 assists, 3.4 rebounds and 1.6 steals for the Colonials during the 2020-21 season. He also shot 40 percent from the field, including 36 percent from behind the arc, and 77 percent from the charity stripe.
As a freshman at EKU, Green played in all 29 games, earning 25 starts, and led the team with 30.5 minutes per game.
Green guided the Colonels to a 22-7 record, including 15-5 in Ohio Valley Conference play. The 15 conference wins were a program record.
A First Team All-OVC selection, Green led the nation’s eighth-best scoring offense at 81.8 points per game. He broke the program’s freshman record with 146 assists, which also was the highest mark by any freshman in the country and the 15th-most by any player overall.
Green was one of only two freshman in the nation to have 400 points and 100 assists last season, joining Gonzaga’s Jalen Suggs.
The Detroit, Mich. native reached double figures 20 times, including his last five games of the season in which he averaged 24.0 points per contest.
Green, a five-time honoree as the OVC Freshman of the Week, was also tabbed to the conference’s all-tournament team after averaging 26.0 points, 4.5 assists, 3.0 rebounds and 3.0 steals per game in the postseason tournament.
As a prep, Green led La Lumiere School (Ind.) to a 38-1 record and an appearance in the Geico High School National Title Game in 2019. Before transferring prior to his junior season, Green averaged 20 points, eight assists and seven rebounds at Detroit Country Day as a sophomore.
