Maddie Penta named SEC Co-Freshman of the Week

AUBURN, Ala. – After a phenomenal collegiate debut in the circle in Auburn softball’s sweep of Southeastern Missouri, freshman pitcher Maddie Penta was named the Southeastern Conference Co-Freshman on the Week on Monday.

Penta shares the award with Georgia’s Sydney Chambley.

Picking up two wins and a shutout over opening weekend, Penta posted a 0.00 earned run average as she allowed just one unearned run in 12 innings of work. She held opponents to a .051 batting average and struck out a team-high 13.

In her first collegiate start, Penta tossed the 26th no-hitter in program history. It was the first no-hitter for the Tigers since Makayla Martin against Maryland on Feb. 18, 2018. Over her five innings of work, the right hander struck out seven as she led Auburn to an 8-0 victory. All four of SEMO’s base runners reach via walks.

The Chesapeake City, Md., native followed up her performance with a second complete-game effort on Sunday. Penta dominated in the circle yet again as she held SEMO to two infield singles in Auburn’s 3-1 victory over the Redhawks to secure the series sweep. In her seven innings of work, Penta issued just one walk and struck out six. The lone run she allowed was unearned.
