DALLAS – Alabama football’s Patrick Surtain II was selected as a finalist for the Bronko Nagurski Trophy, the Football Writers Association of America announced on Wednesday.
In 2016, defensive end Jonathan Allen became Alabama’s lone Bronko Nagurski Trophy winner. The Crimson Tide have had a finalist in nine of the last 10 seasons.

- Rated as the nation’s top corner and No. 7 overall defender by Pro Football Focus
- Maintains a coverage grade of 88.1 according to PFF, the third-best grade in the country
- Allowed 25 yards receiving or fewer in eight of the Tide’s nine games this season
- Targeted just 36 times all season and allowed only 14 completions (1.56 cpg) and 156 yards (17.3 ypg)
The Football Writers Association of America has chosen a National Defensive Player of the Year since 1993. In 1995, the FWAA named the award in honor of the legendary two-way player from the University of Minnesota. Bronislaw “Bronko” Nagurski dominated college football then became a star for professional football’s Chicago Bears in the 1930s. The announcement of the 2020 Bronko Nagurski Trophy recipient will take place on Wed., Dec. 23.
