SYLACAUGA, Ala. – Both Sylacauga varsity programs have advanced to the regional tournament in Montgomery after wins on Tuesday night.
The Lady Aggies stunned the Briarwood Christian Lions with a 37-33 victory. Briarwood was 2-0 vs. Sylacauga this season before last night’s loss. In the process of topping Briarwood, Coach Derrick Crawford tabbed his 300th career victory.
“The kids persevered tonight. They worked, and we were able to come out with a great fourth quarter defensively,” said Crawford on his postgame interview on The Aggie Sports Network’s radio broadcast. “I’m tickled to death at how we’ve played the second half of the season. I’ll take the 300 wins, but more importantly these kids have some unfinished business. I’m extremely proud of them.”
More impressively, Sylacauga was able to win with its two best players, Dakota Johnson and Aurielle Turner in foul trouble.
The varsity boys faced their toughest opponent to date, the Woodlawn Colonels. Sylacauga Head Coach Kent Fullington knew the game would be a tough test, especially dealing with the length of the Colonels, whose roster featured three players over 6-feet 5-inches tall.
Sylacauga, however, got its best game out of its not-so-secret-weapon, Sr. Center Shannon Grant. Grant scored 21 points, dominated the glass, and even added a few magical assists to is stellar stat sheet. Sylacauga’s ‘Big 3’ – which consists of Grant, Christian Twymon and Crews Proctor – all scored in double figures, leading the Aggies to a 74-68 victory.
The Lady Aggies will advance to play Valley on Saturday at Garrett Coliseum in Montgomery. Tip-off is scheduled for 12:00. The boys will face Tallassee at 1:30 on Saturday at the same location.
