Childersburg, the last remaining rival for the Sylacauga Aggies

A rivalry is defined as the state of trying to defeat or be more successful than another. There is no shortage of that definition between Sylacauga and Childersburg.

In the grand scheme of history, Childersburg is the only true football rival Sylacauga football has left. Over the last decade or so we have seen heated rivalries that energized the Aggie fan base burn out over the course of time.

The days of facing off with the Talladega Tigers, which Sylacauga holds a 55-42-4 all-time record over, are done, and the annual battle against B.B. Comer is probably lone gone – forever. However, the Aggie faithful can still get their fix from facing a rival in the Childersburg Tigers.

Just 18 minutes and 11 miles separate the two schools, but the coldness between the two fan bases on one Friday night every year make it seem like the schools are light years apart.

“[Childersburg] is the last rival that we really have, and it’s homecoming,” said Sylacauga Head Coach Matt Griffith. “This means a lot, and a lot of folks are coming back.”

The two teams have matched up 71 times. The Aggies have bested the Tigers in blue and white in 48 of those, while only losing 21 and tying in two. Last season it came down to the wire, and if not for a costly 4th quarter fumble, Childersburg may have not another win over the Aggies in its belt. Sylacauga won that game 13-8, and has not forgotten how close that game was from slipping away. “They’re a lot like they were last year,” said Griffith. “We get their best game. This is their Super Bowl, and we have to understand that.”

Griffith credited Tigers’ Quarterback Cam Thrash as a “big, strong, tough quarterback” while also complimenting the running game.
