WICHITA, Kan. – Senior catcher Matt Scheffler has been named to the 2020 Buster Posey National Collegiate Catcher of the Year Award watch list, the Greater Wichita Area Sports Commission announced this week.
Scheffler is one of sixty catchers across the country, including 10 from the Southeastern Conference, to appear on the initial watch list.
Semifinalists for the award will be announced May 19, and the three finalists will be announced June 3. A final vote among the national committee will occur during the College World Series, and the winner will be announced at the 23rd Annual Greater Wichita Sports Banquet on June 25.
Through 16 games this season, the Kirkland, Washington native leads the team and ranks fifth in the Southeastern Conference with a .432 batting average. He also ranks seventh in the league with a .527 on-base percentage.
Scheffler has multiple hits in five of the last six games and is riding a seven-game hitting streak. He has turned in a .565 clip with 11 runs, three doubles and eight RBI during the streak.
The senior backstop has also been behind the plate in all five of Auburn’s shutouts and leads the conference with three pickoffs. He has also thrown out three would-be base stealers.
Scheffler and the No. 14 Tigers continue a busy stretch of the season with a pair of midweek games vs. Georgia Tech and Wofford Tuesday and Wednesday before opening SEC play vs. No. 23 Texas A&M at Plainsman Park this weekend.
