SYLACAUGA, Ala. – Sylacauga High School has found its new girls basketball coach.
At its regular scheduled meeting Thursday night, the board accepted Superintendent Dr. Michele Eller’s recommendation to promote Victor Smith as the new girls basketball coach at SHS.
“This place has tradition, and the players here have always worked hard,” Smith said. “All you have to do is walk in that gym, and you get excited.”
Smith, who has been a coach for around 17 years, will be the third head coach of the program in as many years after Sylacauga parted ways with former head coach Destiny Frazier last month. He hopes to bring stability back tot he program.
“It’s about consistency,” Smith explained. “We have to get to work, be who we are, and get the job done.”
Sylacauga girls basketball has featured a tremendous defense and fast paced offense over the last few years. In his first season, Smith said the public will see more of the same. “We want to have a good balance of an aggressive and multiple defense, and offensively we will run a lot,” Smith said.
The Lady Aggies are just two years removed from an Elite 8 appearance in Montgomery. Smith wants to go even farther. “Short term, we just want to make sure we build the culture. The long term goal is to be in Birmingham at the end of the year.”
